Why Isn't My Car's Heat Working?

Sep 26, 2023

People tend to keep their cars for a while. According to Carsurance, they tend to own them for roughly 8.4 years. Over that time span, your car will usually work well. But there might be a day, a cold one, when you get in there and turn on the heater and have it blast cool air! That's not ideal. Before you bring it to an auto repair shop, here are several reasons why this might happen:

The Thermostat Is Faulty

This is not a scenario that you want to keep happening. If your thermostat is not working, it's not only going to keep you feeling cold in the winter, but it won't cool your engine properly. That second part can be very expensive. Bring your car into an auto repair shop as soon as you notice the heater isn't working to make sure that it's not the thermostat.

You're Running Low on Antifreeze or Coolant

A lot of car owners run into this problem with their cars. Since there's no antifreeze or coolant, that won't let the hot fluid into your heater core. There are a number of reasons for this happening, including not filling the antifreeze or coolant to the proper levels. Have a professional inspect it!

Your Heater Fan Is Faulty

If your coolant or antifreeze is in good shape, the heater fan may have suffered a short or may be broken. This can cause you to not get the heat that you need in your car's cabin. If you don't want to be cold all winter, drive your car to a repair shop and have it looked at.

There are other things that you need to keep an eye on, such as the blower motor resistor, your heater core, your radiator, and whether your controls are faulty or not. Many of these can lead to situations that are more dire than just a lack of heat in your car. You could see a relatively minor repair turn into something very costly. Be proactive and make sure it's regularly maintained and inspected.
